Generic Management Course
A trusted generic management course at NQF Level 5 — the National Certificate in Generic Management is a full 162-credit qualification for supervisors, team leaders and emerging managers ready to step into senior operational roles. Twelve months of blended, work-integrated learning, delivered nationwide through Phambili Village Campus.
The generic management course built for the step up.
The National Certificate in Generic Management is one of South Africa’s most respected middle-management qualifications — and it’s designed for professionals who are already leading people, teams or small operations and need the formal grounding to do it better.
Over twelve months, this generic management course covers the full spectrum of practical management at NQF Level 5: leadership and people management, operations and service delivery, financial basics, performance management, stakeholder engagement, and managing change in the workplace. It is broad by design, because real managers don’t work in silos.
What makes Phambili’s generic management course different is that theory never sits on its own. Every module connects to scenarios, case studies and assignments drawn from the learner’s actual work environment — we don’t ask you to memorise frameworks, we ask you to apply them. That’s what our blended learning model is built for, and it’s delivered nationwide so employers and self-funded learners across South Africa can access the programme regardless of location.
The qualification is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and recognised across South African industry. It is particularly well-suited to organisations using skills development spend to build their internal management pipeline — the credits count toward B-BBEE skills development scorecards and the programme is fully levy claimable through the relevant SETA.
Inside the generic management course curriculum.
The curriculum balances the people side of management with the numbers side — because leading a team well and running an operation well are the same job, done together.
Leadership & People Management
Leading teams through change, coaching direct reports, handling difficult conversations, and building a culture that performs without burning out.
Operations & Service Delivery
Planning and managing day-to-day operations, setting service standards, tracking delivery against targets, and continuous improvement basics.
Financial Management Fundamentals
Reading financial statements, managing a departmental budget, understanding cost drivers, and making decisions that protect margin.
Performance Management
Setting clear objectives, giving useful feedback, running review conversations that actually change behaviour, and managing underperformance fairly.
Stakeholder & Relationship Management
Working across departments, managing upward to executives, handling suppliers and customers, and navigating organisational politics without getting lost in them.
Strategy & Business Planning
Understanding your organisation’s strategy, translating it into departmental plans, and connecting your team’s daily work to the bigger picture.
Managing Change & Innovation
Leading teams through change they didn’t ask for, spotting opportunities for improvement, and turning good ideas into implemented practice.
Ethics, Governance & Compliance
Ethical decision-making, understanding governance structures, workplace compliance, and the legal basics every manager needs to know.
Supervisors and team leaders ready to take the next step.
This generic management course is built for people who are already managing — formally or informally — and want the qualification to match the role. If you’re a team leader, supervisor, shift manager, section head or junior manager looking to move into a broader leadership position, this programme gives you both the credential and the practical tools.
It’s also an excellent fit for organisations investing in their middle-management pipeline. Because delivery is nationwide, employers funding a cohort of supervisors through this generic management course can build internal capacity across multiple sites while scoring B-BBEE skills development points — a dual return on the same spend.

Digital Foundation
Self-paced online modules cover theoretical grounding, definitions and frameworks. Learners work through the material on their own schedule before class sessions.
Applied Learning
Facilitated classroom sessions where learners work through case studies, debate real management dilemmas, and build confidence applying frameworks to messy scenarios.
Work-Integrated Learning
Group projects, simulations and assignments drawn from the learner’s own workplace. Theory meets practice through structured application tasks with coach feedback.
Workplace Integration
On-the-job application supported by portfolio of evidence. Learners document how they’ve put the qualification into practice, assessed against the SAQA unit standards.
