About this qualification

The automotive manufacturing course built for South Africa’s assembly line workforce.

Automotive manufacturing course learners on a vehicle assembly line at Phambili Village Campus

South Africa’s automotive industry is one of the country’s most significant manufacturing sectors — and it runs on the skills of the people working the assembly lines, component stations and sub-assembly cells inside OEM and supplier plants. This automotive manufacturing course is built to formally qualify that workforce, giving operators the credential, the lean manufacturing understanding, and the quality and safety discipline a modern plant demands.

Over twelve months, the automotive manufacturing course at NQF Level 2 covers the real operational reality of vehicle assembly and component manufacturing: workstation operation, quality standards and inspection, safety and PPE, lean manufacturing principles, 5S workplace organisation, basic tool and equipment use, teamwork on the line, and the continuous improvement mindset that defines automotive work. It is a practical, plant-grounded qualification built around the work operators actually do.

What makes Phambili’s delivery different is that learning happens where the work happens. The theory is delivered in accessible, digestible modules — but the real learning comes from structured assignments inside the learner’s own plant, with coach feedback on how they apply what they are taught. That is what our blended learning model is built for, and it is delivered nationwide so automotive employers across South Africa — from OEM assembly plants to component manufacturers — can build their workforce wherever their facilities are located.

The qualification is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 2 and recognised across the South African automotive industry. It is particularly well-suited to automotive manufacturers investing in their production workforce — the credits count toward B-BBEE skills development scorecards and the programme is fully levy claimable through the relevant SETA, which is especially important in the automotive sector where skills development spend is closely linked to localisation and supplier development requirements.

What you’ll learn

Inside the automotive manufacturing course curriculum.

The curriculum follows the real work of an assembly line operator — from workstation setup and safety, through quality and lean principles, to the teamwork and continuous improvement mindset that defines automotive manufacturing globally.

Module 01

Workplace Safety & PPE

Health and safety in a manufacturing environment, using PPE correctly, hazard recognition, emergency procedures, and the safety culture every automotive plant depends on to protect its workforce.

Module 02

Assembly Line Operations

Workstation operation, cycle times, takt time, standard operating procedures, and the discipline of consistent, repeatable assembly work on a moving production line.

Module 03

Quality Standards & Inspection

Understanding automotive quality standards, basic inspection techniques, identifying defects, right-first-time production, and the cost of quality failures in a high-volume environment.

Module 04

Lean Manufacturing Principles

Introduction to lean manufacturing, the seven wastes, value-add versus non-value-add activity, kaizen basics, and why lean thinking has transformed automotive production globally.

Module 05

5S & Workplace Organisation

The 5S system — sort, set in order, shine, standardise, sustain — and how a well-organised workstation directly impacts safety, quality, productivity and operator wellbeing.

Module 06

Tools, Equipment & Materials Handling

Safe use of hand tools and power tools, torque procedures, component handling, materials presentation on the line, and the basics every operator needs to work accurately and safely.

Module 07

Teamwork & Communication

Working effectively in a team environment, shift handovers, communicating problems early, supporting line balance, and the interpersonal skills that make or break a production team.

Module 08

Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving

Basic problem-solving techniques, how to spot and suggest improvements, contributing to kaizen events, and the mindset of always looking for a better way — the core of automotive excellence.

Who this is for

Production operators and the manufacturers who train them.

This automotive manufacturing course is built for the people doing the real work inside vehicle assembly and component manufacturing plants — line operators, assembly workers, sub-assembly cell workers, machine operators and general production staff who need the formal qualification to match the skills they are building every day at work. It is also an entry point for new workers joining the automotive sector for the first time.

Most learners on this programme are employer-funded. Automotive manufacturers use this qualification to upskill their production workforce, improve quality and efficiency, reduce safety incidents, and build the internal capacity to meet the tough standards global OEMs demand. Because delivery is nationwide, employers can train operators across multiple plants and component suppliers consistently — a dual return on skills spend through improved operations and B-BBEE scorecard points.

How it’s delivered

Four phases of blended learning.

Phambili’s delivery model is adapted for workplace-based learners in shift-work environments. Most learning happens where the work happens — inside the plant — with structured theory and coach support to tie it together.

01

Digital Foundation

Accessible online and print-based modules cover theoretical grounding, manufacturing principles and core concepts. Designed for NQF Level 2 entry and fitted around shift work.

02

Applied Learning

Facilitated sessions where learners work through manufacturing scenarios, quality and lean case studies, and practical problem-solving exercises with coach support.

03

Work-Integrated Learning

Structured assignments drawn directly from the learner’s own plant environment. Theory meets practice inside the production facility, with assessor and coach feedback throughout.

04

Workplace Integration

Full on-the-job application supported by portfolio of evidence. Learners document their practice on the line, assessed against the SAQA unit standards.

Entry requirements

Who qualifies to enrol

  • NQF Level 1 (Grade 9) or equivalent as a minimum
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) considered for experienced production workers without formal NQF 1
  • Working literacy and numeracy in English or a supported home language
  • Currently employed in an automotive manufacturing environment, or entering one through the programme
  • Physically able to perform the work of a production operator
  • Willingness to complete workplace-based assessments and build a portfolio of evidence
Fees & funding

A smart investment in your workforce

Fees are tailored to employer-funded cohorts — this qualification is overwhelmingly delivered as a workforce development programme rather than to self-funded individuals. Because it is NQF-registered and accredited, the full cost qualifies under skills development spend and is claimable through the relevant SETA.

For automotive manufacturers, this programme contributes directly to your B-BBEE skills development scorecard while measurably improving quality, safety compliance, lean maturity and operator competence across your production floor. In the automotive sector, where skills development is closely watched by OEM customers and government policy, this kind of workforce investment often has strategic value well beyond the scorecard points.
