World of Work Course

Understand how work actually works

There’s a gap between what school teaches and what the workplace expects — and most learners only discover it the hard way. This world of work course closes that gap. Over five days, learners get a clear, practical orientation to how organisations are structured, how decisions are made, how performance is measured, and how careers actually progress inside real companies.

The course demystifies the unwritten rules: what a “professional” tone looks like in an email, why meetings happen the way they do, how HR and payroll function, what probation means in practice, what rights and responsibilities come with a contract, and how to read the culture of a new workplace in the first two weeks. It’s the orientation session most employers wish every new hire had already completed.

The world of work course pairs well with Work Readiness, Career Building, and other soft skills courses. It’s often bundled into graduate onboarding programmes and learnership cohorts as the foundation session before role-specific training begins.

What you’ll learn

Eight modules demystifying the workplace

The world of work course is structured around eight practical modules. Each covers an area of workplace life that learners typically don’t encounter in school but hit immediately on their first day at a new job.

Module 01

How Organisations Work

Understand the basic anatomy of a business — departments, hierarchies, reporting lines, and how different functions (HR, finance, operations, sales) connect and influence each other.

Module 02

Employment Contracts & Rights

Read and understand an employment contract. Know your rights under South African labour law, what probation means, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Module 03

Workplace Communication

Learn the written and spoken codes of professional communication — email etiquette, meeting protocols, how to talk to managers, and how to raise issues respectfully.

Module 04

Payroll, Benefits & Deductions

Understand your payslip, tax, UIF, medical aid, retirement contributions, and how to budget on a first salary. Financial literacy for the workplace.

Module 05

Performance & Feedback

How performance is measured, how reviews work, how to prepare for them, and how to turn feedback into career progression rather than defensiveness or disengagement.

Module 06

Workplace Culture & Ethics

Read the unwritten rules of a new workplace. Understand workplace ethics, diversity, inclusion, harassment policies, and how to navigate difficult situations.

Module 07

Teams & Collaboration

Work effectively in teams — understand roles, deadlines, handoffs, dependencies, and the collaboration tools (email, chat, shared drives) every workplace now uses.

Module 08

First 90 Days Playbook

A concrete plan for the first 90 days in a new role — how to onboard well, build relationships, ask good questions, and lay the foundation for long-term success.

How we teach

A four-phase blended learning approach

Phambili’s signature blended learning model applies to every professional development course, including this world of work course. Learners move through four connected phases that combine digital content, real workplace examples, and applied practice. Read more about how we teach.

1

Digital Foundation

Pre-course digital modules cover basic workplace vocabulary and concepts so classroom time focuses on application and discussion.

2

Applied Learning

Facilitator-led sessions use real contracts, payslips, emails, and workplace scenarios to translate abstract concepts into concrete knowledge.

3

Practical Workshops

Hands-on workshops cover reading contracts, drafting professional emails, handling meetings, and reviewing real payslip examples.

4

Post-Course Support

A 30-day check-in and digital resource library give learners reference materials they can come back to throughout their first year of work.
