About this qualification

The poultry farmer course built for commercial farm management.

Poultry farmer course learners inspecting a commercial broiler house at Phambili Village Campus

Running a commercial poultry farm is not just husbandry — it is an operation with production targets, margin pressure, biosecurity risks, staff to manage, feed and health costs to control, and buyers to deliver to on schedule. This poultry farmer course builds the people who can actually do that job, combining the technical knowledge of poultry production with the management and business skills the modern farm demands.

Over twelve months, the poultry farmer course at NQF Level 5 covers the complete operational reality of a commercial poultry farm: flock management across broiler and layer production, housing and environmental control, nutrition and feed management, biosecurity and disease prevention, animal welfare, production planning and record keeping, farm financial management, and the people management skills needed to run a farm team. It is a comprehensive, farm-grounded qualification.

What makes Phambili’s delivery different is that every module connects directly to a real working farm environment. Theory is delivered in structured modules, but the real learning comes from assignments applied inside the learner’s own farm — production records they actually keep, biosecurity audits they actually perform, feed calculations they actually run. That is what our blended learning model is built for, and it is delivered nationwide so farmers and farm managers across South Africa can access the programme wherever they farm.

The qualification is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 5 and recognised across South African agriculture. It is particularly well-suited to commercial poultry businesses investing in their farm management pipeline, emerging farmers building formal qualifications to access funding and markets, and corporate agribusinesses rolling out skills development programmes — the credits count toward B-BBEE skills development scorecards and the programme is fully levy claimable through the relevant SETA.

What you’ll learn

Inside the poultry farmer course curriculum.

The curriculum covers both sides of commercial poultry farming — the technical production work and the management, financial and business skills needed to run a farm as a profitable operation.

Module 01

Flock Management & Production Systems

Broiler and layer production systems, flock cycles, daily husbandry routines, performance targets, and the decisions that determine whether a flock hits its numbers.

Module 02

Housing & Environmental Control

Poultry house design and operation, ventilation, temperature and humidity control, lighting programmes, stocking density, and the environmental factors that make or break bird performance.

Module 03

Nutrition & Feed Management

Feed formulation principles, feed conversion ratios, managing feed costs as the largest input expense, water quality management, and getting the most performance from every kilogram of feed.

Module 04

Biosecurity & Disease Prevention

Biosecurity protocols, vaccination programmes, disease recognition and response, mortality management, and the hygiene discipline that protects a farm from catastrophic losses.

Module 05

Animal Welfare & Ethical Production

Animal welfare standards, handling practices, meeting buyer and regulatory welfare requirements, and the ethical production standards that increasingly determine market access.

Module 06

Production Planning & Record Keeping

Production cycle planning, keeping accurate farm records, analysing performance data, identifying trends early, and using records to make better operational decisions cycle after cycle.

Module 07

Farm Financial Management

Cost of production, margin management, budgeting, cash flow planning, understanding the financial levers that determine farm profitability, and basic farm accounting.

Module 08

People Management & Farm Leadership

Managing a farm team, training workers, health and safety on the farm, performance management, and the leadership skills needed to run a working commercial operation.

Who this is for

Farm managers and commercial poultry farmers.

This poultry farmer course is built for the people running or aspiring to run commercial poultry operations. If you are a farm manager wanting the formal NQF 5 qualification to match your on-farm experience, an emerging farmer building credentials to access funding and commercial contracts, or a farm owner wanting to professionalise your operation — this programme gives you the technical depth and the management framework the role demands.

It is also an excellent fit for corporate agribusinesses and integrated poultry operations investing in their farm management pipeline. How it’s delivered

Four phases of blended learning.

Phambili’s delivery model is designed around the reality of farm work — learners cannot leave the farm for long stretches. Most learning happens on the farm, with structured theory and coach support to tie it together.

01

Digital Foundation

Self-paced online and print-based modules cover theoretical grounding, production principles, and core poultry science. Learners work through the material on their own schedule.

02

Applied Learning

Facilitated sessions where learners work through real farm scenarios, production challenges and management case studies with coach support and peer learning from other farm managers.

03

Work-Integrated Learning

Assignments drawn directly from the learner’s own farm — production records, feed calculations, biosecurity audits, financial analysis. Theory becomes the learner’s actual farm work.

04

Workplace Integration

Full on-the-farm application supported by portfolio of evidence. Learners document a full production cycle, assessed against the SAQA unit standards.
