About this qualification

The business administration course built for the engine room.

Business administration course learners in a collaborative office training session at Phambili Village Campus

Every organisation runs on the people who keep its administration, systems and communication flowing. The National Certificate in Business Administration Services is the qualification that builds those people — and this business administration course gives learners both the credential and the practical toolkit to become indispensable in any workplace.

Over twelve months, the business administration course covers the full range of skills an office professional actually uses: business communication, office systems and procedures, financial administration basics, records management, customer service, teamwork and problem-solving. It’s broad on purpose, because administrative work crosses every department in an organisation.

What makes Phambili’s delivery different is that every module connects to the learner’s real working environment. We don’t teach office administration in the abstract — we teach it through assignments drawn from real workplace scenarios, assessed against the SAQA unit standards. That’s what our blended learning model is built for, and it’s delivered nationwide so employers and self-funded learners across South Africa can access the programme regardless of location.

The qualification is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at Level 4 — the same level as matric — making it an excellent option for school leavers entering the workforce, career changers moving into office environments, and employers building their administrative pipeline. It also serves as a strong foundation for progression into Generic Management at NQF 5.

What you’ll learn

Inside the business administration course curriculum.

The curriculum is designed around the real work of administrative professionals — communication, systems, numbers, and the ability to keep a workplace running smoothly under pressure.

Module 01

Business Communication

Written and verbal communication in a professional context — emails, reports, meeting minutes, telephone etiquette, and navigating difficult workplace conversations with confidence.

Module 02

Office Systems & Procedures

Setting up and maintaining the systems that keep an office running — filing, document control, scheduling, diary management, and the standard operating procedures that make work predictable.

Module 03

Financial Administration

Petty cash, invoicing, basic bookkeeping, expense claims, purchase orders and supporting the finance function — the numerical side of administrative work that every business depends on.

Module 04

Records & Information Management

Managing physical and digital records, protecting confidential information, understanding basic POPIA compliance, and retrieving information quickly when it’s needed.

Module 05

Customer Service & Stakeholder Handling

Handling internal and external customers professionally, managing complaints, and being the calm, competent face of an organisation — often the first and last impression a customer has.

Module 06

Teamwork & Workplace Relationships

Working effectively in teams, supporting colleagues, managing workload across multiple demands, and building the interpersonal skills that distinguish great administrators from adequate ones.

Module 07

Problem-Solving & Decision Making

Identifying workplace problems early, thinking through options, and making sound decisions within the scope of the role — plus knowing when to escalate and when to act.

Module 08

Ethics & Professional Conduct

Workplace ethics, confidentiality, professional standards, and understanding the legal basics every administrative professional needs to protect themselves and their employer.

Who this is for

School leavers, career starters and office professionals.

This business administration course is built for people starting or building a career in an office environment. If you’re a recent matric graduate looking for a practical, employable qualification, a junior admin assistant wanting the certificate to match your role, or a career changer moving into office work from another field — this programme gives you both the credential and the real-world skills.

It’s also an excellent fit for employers investing in their administrative team. Because delivery is nationwide, organisations funding a cohort of admin staff through this business administration course can build consistent capacity across multiple sites while scoring B-BBEE skills development points — a dual return on the same spend.

How it’s delivered

Four phases of blended learning.

Phambili’s delivery model is the same across our QCTO and partner qualifications — adapted for academic programmes to include work-integrated learning rather than workshop practice. The goal is consistent: theory you can actually use on Monday morning.

01

Digital Foundation

Self-paced online modules cover theoretical grounding, definitions and frameworks. Learners work through the material on their own schedule before class sessions.

02

Applied Learning

Facilitated classroom sessions where learners work through case studies, practice workplace scenarios, and build confidence applying what they’ve learned to messy real-world problems.

03

Work-Integrated Learning

Group projects, simulations and assignments drawn from the learner’s own workplace. Theory meets practice through structured application tasks with coach feedback.

04

Workplace Integration

On-the-job application supported by portfolio of evidence. Learners document how they’ve put the qualification into practice, assessed against the SAQA unit standards.
